Three days. One lake. Thousands of incredible moments in the depths of the Peruvian Amazon.
Imagine it was only three days that dramatically transformed your view of the natural world. No bustling tourist attractions. No urban sounds. It was only you, the calm reflective lake, and one of the most biologically diverse rainforests in the world. The Sandoval Lake 3 Day Tour with Tree House Inn is precisely the kind of experience that people remember for their entire lives.
Sandoval Lake is a hidden gem within the Tambopata National Reserve in the southeast of Peru. It is a stunning oxbow lake, i. e. a lake formed by a river’s meander becoming so extreme that the river eventually cuts across the narrow neck of land, creating a free standing lake. The calm lake is surrounded by lush Amazon jungle.
This lake is a habitat for different animals. The giant river otters that live here, are highly endangered and very playful creatures. Along the banks, you can often spot the crocodile-like caimans. The trees are alive with the cacophony of tropical birds. During dawn, as the mist is just lifting off the lake, it almost seems like a picture from the dream that you don’t want to be shattered.
Many people ask: what do you really do for three days in the jungle? The truth is almost anything! Here is what happens:
01 DAY
Welcome to the Amazon
Once you land in Puerto Maldonado, your journey takes off with a boat trip on the Tambopata River that in itself is really an experience. Your professional guide will show you birds, butterflies, and caimans hiding in the river banks. When you arrive at Tree House Inn in the afternoon, you will unpack your things in your jungle lodge and have your first stroll in the rainforest while the jungle sounds surrounding you. Dinner under the stars and fall asleep to the Amazon’s night music.
02 Day
The Big Day — Clay Lick & Deep Jungle
You need to get up before the sun rises. Today is the day for the well-known Chuncho macaw clay lick outing – one of the most breathtaking wildlife scenes in the whole Amazon. Every morning, hundreds of macaws, parrots, and parakeets go to the clay cliffs to eat mineral-rich soil. It is a sight that will not only please your camera, but also leave a lasting enrapture in your heart – vividly coloured birds coming down in multiple waves. Then, after the clay lick, go on a jungle trail with your guide where you may see monkeys, sloths, and other animals that live on the forest floor.
03 Day
Lake Morning & Farewell
Your last morning will be spent on the lake. Face the silent waters with your paddle and glide in utter stillness as the mist gradually reveals the water surface. Keep eyes peeled for giant otters – usually seen here in the wee hours, fishing and playing in their small family groups. Watch hoatzin birds resting on the reeds and your ears will catch the jungle waking up. Come to the lodge for the breakfast and then your guide will take you back to Puerto Maldonado – But, the Amazon will be always in your memory after you leave.
Perhaps you’ve never heard of a clay lick. If so, Here is a basic rundown: In the Amazon, parrots and macaws consume a great deal of fruit and seeds that contain natural toxins. To counteract these toxins, they assemble at clay riverbanks and consume the mineral-rich soil. It may sound quite straightforward but to see it is quite amazing.
The Chuncho macaw clay lick adventure will lead you to a magnificent and lively clay lick among the rest in the Peruvian Amazon. From afar, you observe species after species, silently coming scarlet macaws, blue-and-gold macaws, mealy parrots, all coming together and calling their presence. It is colorful loud chaotic, yet very beautiful. Visitors for the first time are always greatly shocked.
The clay lick is one of the activities that you have to see yourself to believe. No snap shot can describe it the noise, the color, the enormous number of birds. It totally changes your perspective on the Amazon.
